Ayam Cemani Chicken Breed
DescriptionThe Ayam Cemani chicken breed is quite simply an uncommon breed of bird from Indonesia. They possess a recessive gene which causes hyperpigmentation on the body, creating the dark-colored chicken most commonly black on the chest, with internal organs, beak and feathers. In some cases, the red coloring can extend over the entire chest and face, while in other cases, the red coloring only manifests on the breast and upper limbs. The bird itself is gray in color on the belly, chest and legs. While this is one of the rarest breeds of chickens available, it is actually one of the easiest to care for.
Normal Body Temperature For starters, since chickens are basically birds, they possess the ability to regulate their body temperature by flapping their wings. Chickens will commonly turn their heads to the side in order to gain some air. As soon as you pick up one of these birds, examine the feathers closely for any red coloring due to feather lumps or bumps. It’s normal for them to have a normal color on their belly or chest as well as on their legs and beaks; but, if you find them to have reddish coloring everywhere else, you should consider them to be suffering from hyperpigmentation. Normal temperatures for these birds are about 72 degrees F.
Eggshells On the other hand, since Ayam Cemani breeds lay eggs, the hen’s eggshells should be of a normal size and white in color. If they’re cracked, you may find them to have been damaged during the roasting process. They should not be hard or brittle and they should not be white in color when they’re first hatched. You should check their nests daily to watch for broken eggshells because chicks will quickly eat any leftover eggs they can find. This is especially true of older hens.
Grooming If your Ayam Cemani chicken has normal feet, you won’t usually need to groom them because they keep their feet covered when they sleep at night. However, you should brush them every day and take them outside to enjoy the fresh air. If you find that your breeds are not able to keep their long, thin hair unbrushed, you may need to trim it frequently. Trim it just below the tail. If you don’t do this, you’ll notice your chickens become very matted and thick.
Longevity One of the unique aspects of the Ayam Cemani chicken is that it has a lifespan of about ten years. Most other breeds are limited by the time they can be kept. Other common breeds often live for only six months before they are no longer of use to their owners.
That leads us to our next fact about the Ayam Cemani chicken: these birds are extremely healthy. In fact, they are among the healthiest poultry out there. The reason for this is that they are able to maintain a high immune system that protects them from infections. This means that keeping any other breeds of chicken is often unnecessary, as the Ayam Cemani will easily keep all its organs and immune systems in good shape.
Another good characteristic of this bird breed is that they are very prone to allergies. They are not prone to many diseases and can maintain a good body weight. This means that you won’t have to worry about feeding large numbers of chickens that may develop some illnesses. Another great quality of these birds is that they are easy to care for.
Keep in mind that these chickens are easily trained for simple egg collection jobs and for roasting small animals. You can also teach them to lay eggs and cook small animals like snakes and lizards. These traits make them perfect for backyard chicken breeders or small rural properties. This is why Ayam Cemani has quickly become one of the most popular breeds around. If you want to start an exotic chicken farm, then Ayam Cemani chicken breed is the perfect choice.
